Three High on Life Videobloggers Meet Tragic Ending

You may remember the members of High on Life SundayFundayz group when five members of the Canadian group pled guilty to several crimes in American National Parks, including a jaunt across Grand Prismatic Spring. Recent news about High on Life, however, has been tragic.

Videobloggers Hamish McNab Campbell Cross, Parker Heuser, Ryker Gamble, Alexey Lyakh and Justis Cooper Price Brown ended up pleading guilty to misdemeanors in not only Yellowstone but Zion, Death Valley, and Mesa Verde National Parks, as they entered restricted areas in the pursuit of video fame. They paid fines, served jail sentences and were barred from entering public lands managed by the U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

And, last week, there was more bad news about the High on Life group — of the tragic variety. Lyakh, Gamble and a third member of the group not tied to the Yellowstone incidents, Megan Scraper, drowned after being swept into pools at Shannon Falls in Squamish, British Columbia. Shannon Falls features a long set of pools and is regarded by locals as being treacherous, and they lived up to that reputation in this instance, Scraper had slipped and fallen into a pool. and Lyakh and Gamble drowned while trying to save her. From the Vancouver Sun:

Heavy water flow and an extremely difficult terrain were a challenge for the crew involved in the efforts. Shannon Falls runs through a number of pool systems, and the one which the three had gone into was accessible, [RCMP Cpl. Sascha] Banks said.

“There’s some accessible trails from the top of the Sea to Sky Gondola as well as you can hike up the sides of Shannon Falls to get to that area,” she said.

“It looks beautiful, it’s a sunny day, but given the extensive water flow that comes off the mountains, and the number of incidents that we’ve had in the Squamish area lately, people just need to be prepared.”…

“Unless you have the knowledge of that area, the expertise and the right equipment you should not be up there,” Banks said.

Our condolences go out to the families of the departed.
