Firehole Lake Drive is open to travel again, after portions of the road were damaged last week.
High temperatures from nearby thermal features had caused oil to bubble up onto the road, which undermined the surface and rendered it too dangerous for vehicles. Road crews removed the damaged pavement, then mopped up the remaining oil with a mixture of sand and lime.
Despite this incident, there is no evidence of any buildup in hydrothermal activity along the Drive.
Just off the Grand Loop Road between Old Faithful and Madison Junction, Firehole Lake Drive offers visitors a nice 3.3 mile detour from their regular travels. Highlights of the drive include White Dome Geyser, Great Fountain Geyser and the eponymous lake.
