Starting tomorrow, September 1, snowmobilers can enter a lottery for a non-commercial trip permit in Yellowstone National Park.

Fewer folks visited Yellowstone National Park in January 2011 than in January 2010, as bad weather and a poor economy presumably cut down on the number of visitors heading to the Park for day visits and guided snowmobile tours.

When Rick Buchanan asked about biking in Yellowstone National Park during the winter season, he was told to stay away: the only approved methods of transportation -- per the Winter Management Plan -- are guided snowmobiles, coaches and snowshoes. Should biking be considered in future plans?

The lack of snowpack on the Beartooth Pass -- and the unlikely chances more will be on the way -- is forcing the closure of a popular summer ski and snowboard camp as well as foreshadowing what could be a very, very dry summer in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

With the deadline for input into a new Winter Use Plan for Yellowstone National Park fast approaching, government entities are staking out their positions, with Wyoming's Park County pushing for unguided Park access.
