Yellowstone Visitation Down Slightly Again in January

Meanwhile, the changes in winter marketing from concessionaire Xanterra seems to have paid off: snowcoach customers were up by almost a thousand, and visitors entering via the West Entrance were up by 5.8 percent. Presumably many of these folks were spending a day or three at Old Faithful Snow Lodge.

Those stronger numbers couldn’t counter weaker numbers posted by snowmobilers — a decline of 3.6 percent overall — and cross-country skiers, whose numbers dropped by 21 percent. It’s a continuing decline for snowmobiling numbers in Yellowstone.

Overall, 24,517 recreational visits were tallied in 2011, as opposed to 25,595 recreational visits in 2010.
