
At the bottom of the Lamar Valley bison munch their late afternoon meal while a towering column of smoke rises over Specimen Ridge behind them. The bison don’t seem to worry about the fire (presumably). In any case, they won’t be running away until they see a fire approaching.

There's no admission fee to Yellowstone National Park this Saturday in honor of National Public Lands Day, so come out and gawk at the bison and the Antelope Fire after volunteering on the Snow Pass and Howard Eaton trails.


Back in the 1990s, when wolves were re-introduced to Yellowstone National Park, there was a lot of speculation among biologists about how the wolves would affect the ecology. It was important speculation because such a large-scale re-introduction of wolves had never been tried before, and there was a lot riding on its outcome. Not too surprisingly, as research on the results of the re-introduction comes in, not all of the speculation turns out to be true.
