Winter conditions have once again closed the Beartooth Pass and Highway.
The closure started this morning at 6:45 a.m. MST.
According to the Montana Department of Transportation, snow and ice has closed the road on the Wyoming side, from Long Lake up to the stateline. Road conditions on the Montana side are wet with intermittent snow. Montana drivers can make it as far as the stateline before they have to turn around and head back to Red Lodge.
This is the third time the Pass has been closed due to winter conditions. It previously closed in mid-July, then briefly during the NPS Centennial celebration August 25.
It is not known when the Beartooth will reopen. Currently, it is slated to close October 11. In all likelihood, this closure is temporary.
We will update our story when the Beartooth Pass reopens.
UPDATE: the Beartooth Pass has been reopened September 6, 2016. Read the full story here.
