It was a rough Memorial Day weekend in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, as road closures both within and outside the Park appeared to dampen the number of visitors to the area. And things won't get better until the weekend at the earliest.

Adding to the travel woes in Yellowstone National Park: More potential landslides are forcing National Park Service officials to keep the Mammoth Hot Springs-Tower Junction road closed indefinitely while safety checks get underway. And: more snow!

With several road closures -- including the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and Tower Junction due to rockslide-- on the traditional start of the real summer season in Yellowstone National Park, some planning is in order to avoid closed roads and rough patches.

We've already told you about the delays related to snow on the Beartooth Pass, but there are more snow-related delays in Yellowstone National Park over the next two weeks, including a tardy opening of the Dunraven Pass and a temporary closure of the Craig Pass.

Plows are out preparing for this Friday's opening of the Yellowstone National Park road system on the west side of the park, marking the official opening of the Summer 2011 season. Slated to open: the roads from West Yellowstone and Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris, Canyon, Madison and Old Faithful.

Unless something unexpected happens on the weather front -- and there is snow in the forecast for Saturday -- the Dunraven Pass will open for auto traffic Friday, being the last section of Yellowstone National Park road to open for the Summer 2010 season.

Yellowstone National Park's East Entrance will open for the season Friday, May 7, as America's Oldest National Park begins the process of opening for the 2010 summer season.

With snowcoach travel ending in Yellowstone National Park the beginning of this week, National Park Service workers are making the transition to spring, with park road crews began making their first pass with plows to clear a lane south from Mammoth.
