Woman illegally entered Yellowstone, falls into thermal in OF area

A woman illegally entered Yellowstone National Park this morning and fell into a thermal feature in the Old Faithful area, requiring an airlift to Idaho Falls for burns treatment.

The woman, who was not identified by National Park Service officials, slipped and fell into the thermal while backing up to better frame a photograph. She suffered burns at the site but managed to make it to her car and was heading north when she was pulled over by park rangers a mile south of Mammoth Hot Springs. From there she was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation, according to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.

Yellowstone National Park has not yet opened for the summer 2020 season due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. There have been several high-profile arrests made in recent years for those trespassing in Yellowstone, including the notable High on Life Boys. As every visitor to Yellowstone knows, the thermals can be dangerous spots: the trespasser was lucky that her burns were mild enough to allow her to leave the Old Faithful area on her own.
