Yes, the snow has been heavy this winter, but this weekend saw a welcome sign of spring: 2019 Yellowstone spring plowing began, as the road from East Entrance to Lake Butte Overlook (Sylvan Pass) was closed to oversnow travel.
Closing tonight: the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris.
At Mammoth Hot Springs, the Gift Shop, Ski Shop, and food services closed today. The Mammoth Hot Springs Campground, Yellowstone General Store, Post Office, Medical Clinic, the Albright Visitor Center, and self-serve fuel pumps remain open all year.
At Old Faithful, Old Faithful Snow Lodge & Cabins closed. The Bear Den Gift Shop, the Geyser Grill, and the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center will close Friday, March 15.
At Tower Junction, self-serve fuel pumps are available all year.
Of course, any discussions of spring in the context of March in Yellowstone are relative, of course: there is still a lot of snow on the ground, there will be a lot more snow falling this month, and there still are plenty of cold days ahead. But at least the process that leads to a Yellowstone spring opening is underway, and for that we are all grateful.
