Expected bad weather in the next few days is causing officials to call for almost all Yellowstone roads closing early tonight at 7 p.m. local, a closing moved up from noon on Monday.
Of course, this won’t see a total closure of the park: the North and Northeast entrances, as well as the road between the North Entrance and Cooke City, remain open year-round. And various Mammoth services, including the hotel, dining room and general store, will remain open through Thanksgiving weekend, with the general store remaining open and the hotel reopening in December.
After the Yellowstone roads closing, park workers will prep roads for the winter season, which launches Wednesday, Dec. 15. At 8 a.m. roads will be open to snowmobile and snowcoach traffic: West Entrance to Old Faithful, Mammoth to Old Faithful, Canyon to Norris, Canyon to Lake, Old Faithful to West Thumb, South Entrance to Lake, Lake to Lake Butte Overlook, East Entrance to Lake Butte Overlook (Sylvan Pass).
