Pilot Creek, of course, is where Hwy. 212 meets the Chief Joseph Highway, connecting Cody and Yellowstone National Park. That section of road, ironically, opened early this season as crews managed to create access on this snowy area. But the snow is so bad on the Pass they’ve delayed the opening because of safety concerns.
It’s traditional for locals to celebrate the opening of the Beartooth Pass with a Memorial Day drive between Red Lodge and Cooke City. Red Lodge is planning festivities to mark the 75th anniversary of the Beartooth Highway.
