The 25 seronegative, monitored and tagged bison were released last Monday onto the land between the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park and Yankee Jim Canyon, at the northern end of the Gardiner Basin, and then guided to Gallatin National Forest.
The release — billed as an experiment of sorts — was designed to see how the bison will do outside the Yellowstone boundaries. The early verdict is mixed: 24 of the 25 bison were generally content staying in Gallatin National Forest confines, but one refused to leave private property, even with two days of hazing. The decision was then made to kill the bison.
