They are the three most beautiful words in the English language: Yellowstone opens today. As of right now, the west side of the Park is open to traffic, despite some issues with snow, particularly in the Old Faithful area. Here's a look at the rest of the spring road-opening schedule.

Plows are out preparing for this Friday's opening of the Yellowstone National Park road system on the west side of the park, marking the official opening of the Summer 2011 season. Slated to open: the roads from West Yellowstone and Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris, Canyon, Madison and Old Faithful.

Visitation to Yellowstone National Park was down slightly this past winter, as heavy snows and bad weather deterred visitors from driving or busing to the North Entrance for day trips.

Another motorcyclist was killed in Yellowstone National Park when his motorcycle crossed the center line and collided head-on with another vehicle on the Grand Loop Road between Norris and Mammoth Hot Springs, the second such fatality this summer. A young girl riding with him was injured and is stable condition.

The massive road reconstruction in the Gibbon Falls area is taking a giant leap forward today, as a major bridge over the Gibbon River will be in use for the first time, leading to a big shift in traffic patterns in that area of Yellowstone National Park.

We are between seasons in Yellowstone National Park; the winter season has ended and the spring season won't be here until April 16, when some of the Yellowstone Grand Loop Road is expected to open. But you can still visit Yellowstone in this offseason, albeit in a limited fashion: On bike.

With snowcoach travel ending in Yellowstone National Park the beginning of this week, National Park Service workers are making the transition to spring, with park road crews began making their first pass with plows to clear a lane south from Mammoth. 

A group is petitioning the National Park Service to plow the highway between West Yellowstone and Old Faithful year-round, much the same as the road between Gardiner and Cooke City is plowed all winter long.

Mother Nature came to the rescue and blanketed parts of Yellowstone National Park with almost two feet of new snow, clearing the way for Park personnel to officially open the Park for the winter season today.
