Cool, wet weather put a hold on the Yellowstone National Park Lone Star Fire growth, but warmer, drier weather in the upcoming week should give it ample fuel for a future spread.

Colder weather and frost are impacting the Lone Star Fire status, as fire crews will continue to monitor the biggest fire of the summer, which isn’t spreading but smoldering and retaining heat in many spots.

Bad weather is good news, as heavy rain and thunderstorms halt the Lone Star Fire spread, and the Grand Loop Road between the developed Old Faithful area and West Thumb Junction is reopened.

More Lone Star Fire growth yesterday, as increased temperatures and gusty winds fueled an expansion to the east in Yellowstone National Park.

We’re in the prime Yellowstone fire season, so it’s no surprise that the Lone Star Fire growth is now measured at almost 800 acres, as it moves northeast and away from the developed Old Faithful area.

If it’s August, you know it’s Yellowstone fire season–and sure enough, with the fire danger high, we’ve seen the first two wildfires of the 2020 Yellowstone summer season.

A seasonal concessionaire employee pled guilty to starting a July 26, 2019 North Entrance fire by dropping a lit cigarette on the ground while sitting at a picnic table, igniting the blaze. 

Crews contained a fire between the Yellowstone north entrance and the Gardner River, as a human-caused incident affected four acres and stopping traffic from entering the National Park.

Yellowstone officials expect 2017 to be an “average” fire season, especially if the summer stays as dry as it has so far.

The last official weekend of summer provided cold weather—rainy and very much welcomed by many in Yellowstone during this year’s fire season.
